Hair Transplant in Turkey

Hair transplant in Turkey is a surgical procedure in which follicular units are extracted from a permanent donor area at the back and sides of the scalp and implanted into thinning or bald regions. Most patients need 2,500–5,000 grafts, the operation takes 6–8 hours under local anaesthesia, and final density is visible at 10–12 months.

What Does a Hair Transplant in Turkey Cost?

A hair transplant in Turkey costs between $1,800 and $2,500 for an all-inclusive package covering roughly 3,000 grafts, or $0.60–$0.83 per graft. The same procedure costs $7,000–$10,000 in the UK and $9,000–$12,000 in the US, where the quoted price usually covers surgery only.

Three variables move the figure: the number of grafts your Norwood level requires, the technique (FUT is the least expensive, DHI and Sapphire FUE sit at the upper end), and what the package includes.

Cost by graft count
Graft count Typical Norwood level Price range (all-inclusive) Session
1,500–2,500 Norwood 2–3 $1,500 – $1,900 1 day
2,500–3,500 Norwood 3–4 $1,800–$2,200 1 day

Hair Transplant Techniques in Turkey

Turkish clinics use four main techniques: FUE, Sapphire FUE, DHI and FUT. They differ in how grafts are extracted and how the recipient channels are opened, which changes scarring, density potential, recovery time and price. FUE and its sapphire variation account for the large majority of procedures performed in Turkey today.
Technique Extraction Channel opening Best suited to Grafts / session Recovery
FUE Micro-punch, unit by unit Steel blade Most patterns; the default option 3,000–4,500 7–10 days
Sapphire FUE Micro-punch, unit by unit Sapphire-tipped blade High-density work and fine hairlines 3,000–5,000 5–8 days
DHI Micro-punch, unit by unit No separate channel — Choi implanter Hairline refinement, unshaven work, women 2,000–3,500 5–7 days
FUT Strip harvesting Steel blade Very high graft needs, limited donor 4,000–6,000 12–14 days
Robotic Automated punch Steel or sapphire Straight hair, uniform donor areas 2,500–4,000 7–10 days

01

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

removes the channel-opening step entirely. The graft is loaded into a Choi implanter pen and placed directly, so the surgeon controls angle, direction and depth in a single movement. This makes it the preferred choice for hairline work and for procedures where the head is not shaved. See our DHI hair transplant page for the Choi pen protocol.

02

Sapphire FUE

is a variation of FUE in which the recipient incisions are opened with sapphire-tipped blades instead of steel. The sharper, smoother edge produces narrower channels, which allows grafts to sit closer together and shortens crusting time. We cover the density and healing differences on our Sapphire FUE hair transplant page.

03

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

is the baseline method. Follicular units are removed individually from the donor area with a micro-punch of 0.7–0.9 mm, leaving dot-shaped marks rather than a linear scar. Read the full procedure and recovery detail on our FUE hair transplant page.

04

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)

harvests a strip of scalp from the donor area and dissects it into grafts under a microscope. It leaves a linear scar but yields a high graft count in one session, which still makes it relevant for advanced hair loss. Details on our FUT hair transplant page.

05

Unshaven hair transplant

allows grafts to be extracted and implanted without shaving the recipient area, so the procedure is not visible afterwards. It is limited in graft count and takes longer. See unshaven hair transplant.

06

Robotic hair transplant

uses an automated system for the extraction phase, reducing operator fatigue on long sessions. See robotic hair transplant.

07

Female hair transplant

follows a different planning logic: the pattern is diffuse rather than receding, and the procedure is usually performed unshaven with DHI. See female hair transplant.

How Many Grafts Do You Need?

The number of grafts depends on the size of the bald area and the density you want to restore. A receding hairline (Norwood 2–3) typically needs 2,000–3,000 grafts; a bald crown plus hairline (Norwood 5) needs 4,000–5,000. Density of 35–45 follicular units per cm² reads as natural in most hair types.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

You are a suitable candidate for a hair transplant if your hair loss has stabilised, your donor area at the back and sides of the scalp still has healthy density, and you have no uncontrolled systemic condition. Age matters less than pattern stability — most surgeons prefer to operate after 25.

Requires medical clearance

Before and After Results

Hair transplant results develop in a predictable sequence: transplanted hairs shed between weeks 2 and 6, regrowth begins around month 3, roughly 60% of final density is visible at month 6, and the result matures between months 10 and 12.

Recovery Timeline

Recovery from a hair transplant in Turkey takes 7–10 days for visible healing and 10–12 months for the final result. Crusts fall away by day 10, shock loss occurs between weeks 2 and 6, and new growth starts around month 3.
Period What to expect What to avoid
Days 1–3 Swelling on the forehead, redness in the recipient area Touching or scratching the grafts; bending forward
Days 4–10 Crusting, first washes, gradual reduction in redness Direct sun, sweating, hats that press on the grafts
Days 10–14 Crusts gone, donor area closed Swimming, sauna, alcohol
Weeks 2–6 Shock loss — transplanted hairs shed. This is expected and not a failure Panic-driven use of unprescribed products
Months 2–3 Quiet phase, little visible change Judging the result
Months 3–6 New growth, roughly 60% of density by month 6 —
Months 10–12 Final density, texture and direction settle —

What Our Patients Say

Risks and Side Effects

Hair transplant risks in Turkey are the same as anywhere else and are mostly short-lived: swelling, crusting, temporary numbness and shock loss. Serious complications — infection, folliculitis or poor graft survival — are uncommon and usually traceable to graft handling, extraction technique or aftercare compliance.
Risk Frequency How it is managed
Forehead swelling Common, days 2–4 Head elevation, cold compress
Crusting Expected, days 3–10 Controlled washing protocol
Shock loss Expected, weeks 2–6 No intervention; hair returns
Temporary numbness Common, weeks 2–8 Resolves without treatment
Folliculitis Uncommon Topical or oral antibiotics
Infection Rare Sterile technique, prophylactic antibiotics
Poor graft survival Uncommon Graft-out-of-body time control, correct implantation depth
Visible donor depletion Avoidable Extraction pattern planning, punch diameter control

Scope of this guide

This page explains techniques, graft planning, pricing structure and recovery. It does not provide a personal medical diagnosis, guarantee a specific density, or replace a consultation. Suitability and expected outcome can only be assessed after a physical or photographic examination by a qualified surgeon.

Why Do Patients Choose Turkey?

Patients choose Turkey because the cost per graft is 3–5 times lower than in Western Europe or the US while the technique and equipment are the same, clinics operate at a volume that few Western centres match, and the entire trip — surgery, hotel, transfers, aftercare — is organised as a single package.

Volume and repetition

Istanbul clinics perform hair transplants daily rather than occasionally, which is what builds surgical consistency.

Cost structure, not cheaper medicine

The price gap comes from labour costs, exchange rates and healthcare pricing, not from shortcuts in materials or technique.

Regulation

Clinics operating for international patients require a Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate from the Ministry of Health.

Logistics

Istanbul is within a 4-hour flight of most of Europe and the Middle East.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a hair transplant in Turkey?

An all-inclusive package for around 3,000 grafts costs $1,800–$2,500. The figure moves with graft count and technique.
Three to four nights. Day 1 consultation and surgery, Day 2 check, Day 3 first wash, Day 4 departure.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is not painful. The anaesthetic injections themselves cause brief discomfort; sedation is available.
Regrowth begins at month 3, about 60% of density is visible at month 6, and the result matures between months 10 and 12.
Grafts taken from the permanent donor zone keep their genetic resistance to DHT and do not fall out. Untransplanted native hair can continue to thin, which is why pattern stability matters.
Yes, with the unshaven technique, though the graft count achievable in one session is lower.
Yes. Female pattern loss is diffuse rather than receding, so planning and technique differ.
Most surgeons prefer patients over 25, because the pattern needs to be stable before permanent grafts are placed.
A protein- and vitamin-rich diet supports healing. Alcohol and smoking should be avoided for the first two weeks.
Graft survival above 90% is the expectation with correct handling. Revision planning is assessed at the 12-month follow-up.
