Hair Transplant for Women in Turkey

A female hair transplant moves hair follicles from a stable donor area at the back of the scalp into areas where a woman’s hair has thinned or receded — most often the hairline, temples or parting. It is only effective for certain types of hair loss, so a medical assessment always comes first. At our Istanbul clinic, hair transplants for women are usually performed without shaving and cost from €[X,XXX] (about £[X,XXX] or $[X,XXX]) as an all-inclusive package.

Can Women Have a Hair Transplant?

Yes, but fewer women are suitable than men, and the reason is the donor area. Male hair loss usually leaves a stable band of hair at the back and sides that is genetically resistant to thinning. In many women, hair loss is diffuse: it thins evenly across the whole scalp, including the back. Moving hair from one thinning area to another does not create density; it only redistributes the problem.
A transplant works well for women whose hair loss is localised and whose donor area is stable — for example, a high or receding hairline, thinning along the parting, hair lost at the temples from years of tight hairstyles, or scars from surgery or injury. For diffuse thinning, medical treatment is usually the better route, and we will tell you so.

What Causes Hair Loss in Women, and Can a Transplant Help?

The cause of your hair loss decides whether a transplant is the right treatment. Some causes respond well; others need medical treatment first, and some will not respond to a transplant at all.
Cause Typical pattern Can a transplant help? What comes first
Female pattern hair loss Widening parting, thinning on top, hairline preserved Yes, if stable and the donor is unaffected Medical treatment to stabilise
Naturally high or receding hairline High forehead, temple recession Yes, very effective Assessment only
Traction alopecia, established Loss at the hairline and temples from tight styling Yes, very effective Stop tension styling
Surgical or injury scars Localised patch, e.g. after a facelift Yes, after scar assessment Scar must be fully healed
Diffuse unpatterned alopecia Thinning everywhere, including the back Usually not Medical treatment
Telogen effluvium Sudden shedding after illness, stress, childbirth or weight loss No Usually recovers within 6 to 12 months
Thyroid, iron or vitamin deficiency Diffuse thinning No Treat the underlying cause
PCOS and hormonal causes Pattern thinning on top Sometimes, once controlled Hormonal assessment and treatment
Alopecia areata Round bald patches No, while active Dermatological treatment
Scarring alopecia, e.g. frontal fibrosing alopecia Receding hairline with shiny skin, eyebrow loss Only once inactive for [2] years or more Dermatological diagnosis and treatment

Female Pattern Hair Loss: Stages and What They Mean

Female pattern hair loss is usually graded on the Ludwig scale, which describes thinning that widens from the parting outwards while the front hairline is largely preserved. Unlike male pattern loss, it rarely leads to complete baldness in any area.
Ludwig stage What it looks like Transplant suitability Usual approach
Ludwig I Mild thinning along the parting, scalp just visible Rarely needed Medical treatment
Ludwig II Noticeable widening of the parting, reduced volume on top Often suitable if the donor is dense Medical treatment plus transplant
Ludwig III Extensive thinning across the top, scalp clearly visible Case by case, limited by donor supply Medical treatment; transplant for coverage, not full density

Why Diagnosis Comes Before Any Transplant

Many causes of hair loss in women are treatable without surgery, and some make a transplant fail if they are not treated first. Before any procedure is confirmed, we check:
  • Iron stores (ferritin) — low iron is one of the most common reversible causes of thinning
  • Thyroid function (TSH, T3, T4) — both under- and overactive thyroid cause hair loss
  • Vitamin D and B12
  • Hormones — testosterone, DHEA-S and prolactin where polycystic ovary syndrome or another hormonal cause is suspected
  • Scalp examination with trichoscopy — magnified imaging that distinguishes pattern loss from scarring alopecia, alopecia areata and traction damage
  • Donor density — the number of follicular units per cm² at the back of the scalp, and whether that area is also thinning
If you have recent blood test results from your own GP or physician, send them with your photographs. It saves time and avoids repeating tests.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Female Hair Transplant?

Usually a good candidate
  • A naturally high or receding hairline, or recession at the temples
  • Traction alopecia where follicles have been permanently lost and tight styling has stopped
  • Thinning along the parting or at the front, with a stable, dense donor area
  • Hair loss from facelift, brow lift or other surgical scars
  • Hair loss from an injury or burn, after assessment of the scar tissue
  • Stable female pattern hair loss, Ludwig I to II, already controlled with medical treatment

Usually not a candidate
  • Diffuse unpatterned alopecia, where the donor area is also thinning
  • Active telogen effluvium — sudden shedding after illness, stress, childbirth or rapid weight loss
  • Active alopecia areata
  • Active scarring alopecia, such as frontal fibrosing alopecia or lichen planopilaris
  • Hair loss caused by an untreated thyroid, iron or hormonal problem

Female Hairline Restoration: Transplant or Hairline Lowering?

A high forehead or receding female hairline can be treated in two ways. A hair transplant adds hair in front of the existing hairline. Surgical hairline lowering removes a strip of forehead skin and advances the scalp forward. Each suits a different situation.
Comparison point Hair transplant Surgical hairline lowering
How it works Grafts added in front of the existing hairline Strip of forehead skin removed, scalp advanced
Typical lowering [1 to 2] cm [2 to 3] cm or more
Anaesthesia Local Local with sedation, or general
Scar Dot scars in the donor area, hidden by hair Fine line along the new hairline, usually concealed by hair growing through it
When you see the result 12 to 18 months Immediately
Best suited to Temple recession, irregular hairline, moderate height High forehead with a good existing hairline and loose scalp
Can they be combined? Yes: lowering first, a transplant later to soften the edge or fill the temples
A female hairline is designed differently from a male one. It is usually rounder, with softer temple points and no recession at the corners. The front edge uses fine single-hair grafts placed in a slightly irregular pattern, and the hairs are angled to match the direction of your existing hair. Where you have them, bring photographs of your hairline from before it changed.

How a Female Hair Transplant Is Performed: Unshaven by Default

For most women the procedure is performed without shaving the hair in the area being treated. Grafts are extracted from a narrow band at the back of the scalp that is hidden when the hair above it falls down, and implanted between existing hairs with DHI or FUE. You leave the clinic with your normal hairstyle.
Option Donor area Area treated Typical grafts Best suited to
Unshaven Narrow band trimmed, hidden under longer hair Not cut [1,000 to 2,500] Most women, especially hairline and parting
Fully unshaven Not cut Not cut [1,000 to 2,000] Small areas, strong donor, suitability assessed individually
Shaved Shaved Shaved [2,000 to 3,500] Larger areas with little native hair, e.g. burn scars
Because implantation takes place between existing hairs, some native hair near the grafts can shed in the weeks after surgery. This shock loss is more common in women than in men. In most cases the hair regrows within three to four months. For more detail on the technique, see our [unshaven hair transplant] guide.

Female Hair Transplant Before and After Results

How Many Grafts Do Women Usually Need?

Fewer than men, in most cases. Female hair loss rarely leaves a completely bald area, so grafts are added to existing hair rather than covering bare scalp.
Area treated Typical grafts Usual technique
Temples only [500 – 1,000] Unshaven DHI
Hairline lowering by transplant [1,000 – 1,800] Unshaven DHI
Thinning along the parting [1,200 – 2,000] Unshaven DHI or FUE
Traction alopecia, hairline and temples [1,200 – 2,200] Unshaven DHI
Front and top, Ludwig II [1,800 – 2,500] Unshaven FUE and DHI
Surgical or injury scar Depends on size DHI, test area sometimes advised

All treatment is priced and invoiced in euro. Sterling and dollar figures are indicative conversions and vary with the exchange rate.

Female Hair Transplant Recovery Week by Week

Recovery follows the same timeline as any hair transplant. The main difference for women is how easily the treated area can be hidden, and the higher chance of temporary shedding of native hair around the grafts.
Timeframe What happens What other people are likely to notice
Day 1 to 3 Tightness, mild swelling on the forehead, small scabs at each graft Possible forehead swelling; scabs hidden by hair
Day 4 to 14 Scabs loosen and wash away Usually nothing, if hair is styled over the area
Week 2 to 8 Transplanted hairs shed; some native hair nearby may shed too Possibly slightly less volume in the treated area
Month 3 to 4 New growth begins; shed native hair starts to return Nothing
Month 6 to 9 50 to 70 per cent of the result Gradual improvement in density
Month 12 to 18 Final result Fuller hairline or parting

Find Out If a Transplant Can Help You

Send four photographs of your scalp — front, top, both sides — and, if you have them, recent blood test results. Within [24] hours a patient consultant will reply with whether a transplant is likely to help, an estimated graft range and a fixed price. If it is not likely to help, we will say so and explain why. Free, without obligation.

Timing: Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, Menopause and Hormonal Treatment

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. We do not perform hair transplants during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Hair shedding in the months after childbirth is common and usually recovers on its own; we recommend waiting at least 12 months after giving birth, and until you have stopped breastfeeding, before assessing whether a transplant is needed.

Menopause. Hair often thins around menopause as hormone levels change. A transplant can be effective once the pattern of loss has stabilised, typically 12 to 24 months after it begins, and when the donor area is not also thinning.

Hormonal treatment and contraception. Some contraceptive pills and hormone therapies affect hair growth. Tell us about any you take. A change in hormonal treatment can change the pattern of hair loss, so it is best to be on a stable regime for at least 6 months before surgery.

Medical Treatment Alongside a Transplant

A transplant restores hair in the treated area. It does not stop the rest of your hair from thinning. Most women with female pattern hair loss benefit from continuing medical treatment after surgery to protect the native hair around the grafts.
Topical or low-dose oral minoxidil is the most widely used option. Anti-androgen medications may be considered where hormonal factors are involved. Finasteride and dutasteride are not suitable for women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant. Any medication should be started and monitored by your own doctor or dermatologist, who should be told that you have had a transplant.

Why Women Choose Turkey for a Hair Transplant

Female hair transplants are specialist procedures, and experience comes from volume. Istanbul’s clinics perform a high number of unshaven procedures each year, prices are lower than in the UK and US, and hotel, transfers and aftercare are included in one price. Not every clinic assesses women properly. Before booking anywhere, ask whether blood tests and a scalp examination are done before the procedure is confirmed, whether the clinic has ever advised a woman not to have a transplant, and to see results from female patients with hair loss like yours. Our [cost guide] lists eight further questions worth asking.

Hair Transplant for Women in Turkey: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if the hair loss is localised and the donor area at the back of the scalp is stable. A transplant works well for receding or high hairlines, traction alopecia and stable thinning at the parting. It rarely helps diffuse thinning across the whole scalp.
Yes. Female patients make up [XX] per cent of our hair transplant patients. Most travel from the UK, Europe and the US for unshaven procedures, which Istanbul clinics perform in high numbers.
Through photographs, blood tests and a scalp examination. The key questions are what is causing the loss, whether it is stable, and whether the donor area is dense and unaffected. Send your photographs for a free initial assessment.
No, in most cases. Female hair transplants are usually unshaven: grafts are taken from a narrow band at the back that is hidden by the hair above, and placed between existing hairs.
The surgery is the same. What differs is the assessment, because female hair loss has more possible causes; the hairline design, which is rounder and softer; and the approach, which is usually unshaven with fewer grafts added to existing hair.
Usually [1,000 to 2,500]. A hairline or temple restoration typically needs [1,000 to 1,800], and thinning along the parting [1,200 to 2,000]. The figure depends on the area, your hair calibre and your donor density.
Yes. A transplant can lower a high hairline by around [1 to 2] cm by adding hair in front of it. For larger reductions, surgical hairline lowering may be more suitable, sometimes combined with a transplant to soften the edge.
Yes, once the follicles have been permanently lost and the tight styling that caused it has stopped. Transplanted hair is as vulnerable to traction as native hair, so tight braids, extensions and high ponytails must be avoided on the treated area afterwards.
Sometimes. PCOS-related hair loss should first be managed medically. If the pattern then stabilises and the donor area is unaffected, a transplant can restore thinning areas. Hormone tests are part of the assessment.
Yes, once the pattern of loss has stabilised, usually [12 to 24] months after it begins, and if the donor area is not also thinning.
Some native hair near the grafts may shed in the weeks after surgery. This shock loss is more common in women and usually recovers within three to four months.
After [4 to 6] weeks, once the scalp has fully healed. Avoid bleach and strong chemical treatments until after [3] months.
At our Istanbul clinic, from €[X,XXX] (about £[X,XXX] or $[X,XXX]) as an all-inclusive package including blood tests, the procedure, hotel, transfers, medication and 12 months of follow-up.
The transplanted follicles are permanent because they come from a stable donor area. Native hair that was not transplanted can continue to thin, so medical treatment is often continued afterwards.
Yes. Traction alopecia and CCCA are more common in Black women and must be assessed first, as they are treated differently. See our [Afro hair transplant] guide.
