Afro Hair Transplant in Turkey

An Afro hair transplant is an FUE or DHI procedure adapted for tightly curled and coily hair, whose follicles curve beneath the skin rather than growing straight down. That curve makes extraction slower and more technical, but it also means each graft covers more of the scalp, so fewer grafts are usually needed for the same visual density. At our Istanbul clinic, Afro hair transplants cost from €3,500 (about £3,100 or $4,100) as an all-inclusive package.

Why Afro Hair Needs a Different Approach

The same surgical steps apply to every hair type. What changes with Afro-textured hair is what lies beneath the skin, and that affects three things: how grafts are extracted, how far each graft goes, and how the skin heals.

01

The follicle curves below the skin

In straight hair the follicle runs in a straight line from the surface to the bulb. In tightly curled and coily hair it curves, sometimes into a C or S shape. A standard straight punch following the angle of the hair at the surface can cut through the curved follicle further down — called transection — and a transected graft will not grow. Extraction has to follow the curve, which is slower and needs a surgeon who has done it many times.

02

Each graft covers more ground

Because curled hair stands away from the scalp rather than lying flat, a single graft of Afro-textured hair covers a larger area than a graft of straight hair. For the same visual density, most patients need fewer grafts. This partly offsets the lower number of grafts that can be extracted per hour.

03

The skin heals differently

Darker skin is more prone to keloid and hypertrophic scarring, to changes in pigmentation around extraction sites, and to ingrown hairs as curled hair regrows through healing skin. None of these rules out a transplant, but each has to be screened for and planned around before surgery.

Afro Hair Types and What They Mean for Surgery

Afro-textured hair is usually classified by curl pattern, from loose curls (type 3) to tight coils (type 4C). The tighter the curl, the more the follicle curves below the skin and the more carefully extraction must be planned.
Curl type What it looks like Follicle below the skin Extraction difficulty Coverage per graft
3C Tight corkscrew curls Gently curved Moderate Higher than straight hair
4A Defined S-shaped coils Curved Moderate to high High
4B Z-shaped coils with sharp angles Strongly curved High High
4C Very tight coils, little visible curl definition Strongly curved, often C-shaped Highest Highest

FUE or DHI for Afro Hair?

Both techniques work well on Afro-textured hair. The choice depends on the area being treated and the size of the procedure, and many patients receive both.
Comparison point Sapphire FUE DHI
Extraction Adapted punch following the curved follicle Adapted punch following the curved follicle
Implantation Sapphire blade incisions, grafts placed with forceps Choi implanter, needle matched to the curved graft
Best suited to Larger areas, mid-scalp Hairline, temples, crown, unshaven procedures
Control over curl direction Good Highest, set per graft
Handling of fragile curved grafts Grafts wait briefly before placement Grafts loaded and placed with minimal handling
Often combined? Yes: DHI at the hairline and crown, Sapphire FUE for the mid-scalp
Extraction is the same in both — it is the stage where Afro-textured hair makes the biggest difference. Whichever technique is used for implantation, ask how the clinic adapts extraction for curved follicles and what its transection rate is.

How We Adapt the Procedure for Afro-Textured Hair

  1. Donor analysis. Curl type, follicle curvature, hair calibre and donor density are assessed from your photographs and again in person.
  2. Scar history check. Any history of keloids, raised scars or scars that have darkened is reviewed before the procedure is confirmed.
  3. Test extraction. At the start of surgery a small number of grafts are extracted and examined under magnification. If transection is higher than expected, punch size, depth or angle are adjusted before continuing.
  4. Adapted punches. Extraction uses punches selected for curved follicles, typically slightly wider than for straight hair, set to a controlled depth.
  5. Graft handling. Curved grafts are more fragile once extracted. They are sorted and kept hydrated in a holding solution until implantation.
  6. Implantation along the curl. Grafts are placed so that the curl emerges in the same direction as the surrounding native hair, at a low angle at the hairline and following the natural pattern elsewhere.

Medical Screening: Keloids, Traction Alopecia and CCCA

Three conditions are more common in patients with Afro-textured hair and change whether, and how, a transplant should be done. We screen for all three before confirming any procedure.
Condition What it is Does it rule out a transplant? What happens instead
Keloid scarring Raised scar tissue that grows beyond the original wound Not always History reviewed; a small test area may be treated and observed for [3 to 6] months first
Traction alopecia, early Thinning from tension; follicles still alive Yes, for now Stop tension styling; hair may recover without surgery
Traction alopecia, established Follicles permanently lost at the hairline or temples No Transplant is often very effective if tension styling stops
CCCA, active Scarring hair loss spreading from the crown Yes Dermatological treatment first
CCCA, stable No progression for at least [12] months Case by case Test area sometimes advised; graft survival in scar tissue is lower
Pseudofolliculitis, ingrown hairs Inflamed bumps as curled hair regrows into the skin No Managed with aftercare and, if needed, treatment
Traction alopecia is caused by tension from tight braids, cornrows, weaves, locs or extensions. In its early stages it can recover if the tension stops. Once follicles have been lost permanently, a transplant can restore the hairline — but only if the styling that caused the loss changes, because transplanted hair is just as vulnerable to traction as native hair.
CCCA (central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia) is a scarring hair loss that starts at the crown and spreads outwards, most common in women of African descent. Transplanting into active CCCA usually fails. The condition must be diagnosed, treated and stable, typically for at least [12] months, before a transplant is considered.

Afro Hair Transplant Before and After Results

Each result shows the curl type, graft count, technique and how many months after surgery the photograph was taken.

Afro Hair Transplant for Women

Hair loss in Black women usually has a different cause from hair loss in men, and the cause decides whether a transplant will work. The most common are traction alopecia from long-term tight styling, CCCA at the crown, and female pattern hair loss along the parting. Chemical relaxers and heat damage can also contribute.
A dermatological assessment always comes first. Where the loss is from traction at the hairline or temples and the follicles are gone, a transplant is often very effective. Where the loss is at the crown, CCCA must be ruled out. Most women need [1,000 to 2,500] grafts, and procedures are usually performed without shaving the recipient area, which long or styled hair conceals well. See our [unshaven hair transplant] guide.
After a transplant, avoid tight braids, weaves, extensions and chemical relaxers for at least [6] months, and ideally avoid high-tension styles permanently on the treated area.

Designing a Natural Afro Hairline

A natural hairline is one that looks like it belongs to your face, not one copied from a straight-hair template. For Afro-textured hair that means three things. The front edge is soft and slightly irregular, using single-hair grafts rather than a sharp line. The height and shape follow your facial proportions and, where you can show us, your hairline before the loss began. And the curl at the front is placed at a low angle so it grows forward and lies with the rest of your hair rather than standing upright.
Bring or send photographs of your hairline from before it receded. They are the single most useful reference for a natural result.

Afro Hair Transplant Cost in Turkey

An Afro hair transplant at our Istanbul clinic costs from €3,500 (about £3,100 or $4,100) as an all-inclusive package, with a choice of DHI or Sapphire FUE. The price is fixed before you travel and covers the maximum number of grafts your donor area can safely provide, so it does not change with the number of grafts.
Afro hair transplants take longer per graft than straight-hair procedures because extraction must follow the curved follicle. Some clinics charge more for this; others quote a standard price and reduce the graft count. Ask any clinic whether the Afro-textured procedure is priced differently and why.

How Many Grafts Do You Need with Afro Hair?

Usually fewer than with straight hair of the same density. Because curled hair covers more scalp per graft, a hairline that might need 2,500 straight-hair grafts can often be restored with around [1,800 to 2,000] Afro-textured grafts. The figures below are typical ranges; your own figure depends on curl type, hair calibre and the colour contrast between hair and skin.
Area treated Typical grafts, straight hair Typical grafts, Afro-textured hair
Temples only 800 – 1,200 [600 – 1,000]
Hairline and temples 2,000 – 2,500 [1,500 – 2,000]
Hairline to mid-scalp 3,000 – 3,500 [2,200 – 2,800]
Crown only 1,500 – 2,500 [1,200 – 2,000]
Hairline, mid-scalp and crown 4,000 – 5,000 [3,000 – 3,800]
Lower contrast between hair and skin colour also helps. Dark hair on dark skin shows less of the scalp between grafts than dark hair on pale skin, so the same number of grafts reads as fuller.

Afro Hair Transplant Recovery Week by Week

The growth timeline is the same as for any hair type. Two things differ: redness can be less visible but scabs may take a few days longer to clear, and ingrown hairs are more common as curled hair regrows.
Timeframe What happens What to watch for with Afro-textured hair
Day 1 to 3 Tightness, mild swelling, small scabs at each graft Redness is less visible on darker skin; swelling is the main sign
Day 4 to 14 Scabs loosen and wash away Scabs may take a few days longer to clear around curled grafts
Week 2 to 8 Shock loss: most transplanted hairs shed Scalp can feel dry; start moisturising as instructed
Month 2 to 4 New growth begins Ingrown hairs and small bumps are common as curls regrow
Month 6 to 9 50 to 70 per cent of the result New hair may look finer or straighter before the curl settles
Month 12 to 18 Final result Curl pattern and texture fully matured

What Our Robotic Hair Transplant Patients Say

How to Prepare for an Afro Hair Transplant and Care for It Afterwards

Before surgery

  • Remove braids, weaves, extensions and locs from the treated and donor areas at least [2] weeks before
  • Stop chemical relaxers and hair dye for [4] weeks before
  • Stop blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil and vitamin E 7 days before, unless prescribed
  • No smoking for 14 days and no alcohol for 7 days before
  • Tell us about any history of keloids, raised scars or scarring hair loss

After surgery

  • Do not touch or scratch the implanted area for 10 days
  • First wash at the clinic on day 2, then gentle daily washing as instructed until day 14
  • From week 2, moisturise the scalp with the product we recommend; Afro-textured scalp dries out quickly while healing
  • Treat any ingrown hair with a warm compress; do not pick at it
  • No braids, weaves, extensions or tight styles for at least [6] months
  • No chemical relaxers or hair dye for [3] months
  • No gym or heavy exercise for 14 days, no direct sun for 4 weeks
  • Send follow-up photographs at months 1, 3, 6 and 12

Risks of Afro Hair Transplant and How They Are Managed

Most risks are the same as for any FUE or DHI procedure. A few are more likely with Afro-textured hair and darker skin. None should be a surprise if they have been discussed at assessment.
Risk More likely with Afro hair? How it is managed
Graft transection during extraction Yes Test extraction, adapted punch size and depth, experienced surgeon
Keloid or hypertrophic scarring Yes Scar history screening, test area where indicated
Pigment change around donor dots Yes Usually fades over months; hidden by hair at grade 2 or longer
Ingrown hairs, folliculitis Yes Warm compresses, scalp care, clinic treatment if persistent
Swelling, scabbing, numbness No Standard aftercare, resolves within weeks
Unnatural hairline or curl direction Avoidable Hairline designed for your face, grafts placed along the curl
Over-harvested donor Avoidable Even extraction, graft count limited to safe donor capacity

Why Patients Choose Turkey for an Afro Hair Transplant

Afro-textured extraction is a specialist skill, and experience comes from volume. Few clinics in the UK perform enough Afro hair transplants to build that experience, and in the US the procedure is widely available but expensive. Istanbul’s surgical teams perform a high number of procedures each year, prices are lower, and hotel, transfers and aftercare are included in one price.
Experience with Afro hair varies widely between Turkish clinics. Before booking, ask how many Afro-textured procedures the team performs, whether it runs a test extraction, how it screens for keloids and CCCA, and to see before and after results for your curl type. Our [cost guide] lists eight further questions worth asking.

Afro Hair Transplant in Turkey: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Afro-textured hair can be transplanted with FUE or DHI, adapted for follicles that curve below the skin. Extraction is slower and more technical than with straight hair, so the surgeon’s experience with curved follicles matters more than the choice of technique.
The follicle curves beneath the skin, so a straight punch can cut through it during extraction. Surgeons compensate with a test extraction, adapted punches and a controlled depth. Darker skin also needs screening for keloid scarring and pigmentation changes.
Both work. DHI gives precise control at the hairline and crown and suits unshaven procedures. Sapphire FUE covers larger areas faster. Many patients receive both. What matters most is how extraction is adapted, which is the same for both techniques.
Usually fewer than for straight hair, because curled hair covers more scalp per graft. A hairline restoration often needs [1,500 to 2,000] Afro-textured grafts, and hairline plus crown [2,500 to 3,500]. Your figure depends on curl type and donor density.
At our Istanbul clinic, from €3,500 (about £3,100 or $4,100) as an all-inclusive package with DHI or Sapphire FUE, covering the procedure, hotel, transfers, interpreter, medication and 1 year of follow-up. The price is fixed before you travel and does not change with the number of grafts.
Sometimes. A history of keloids does not automatically rule out FUE, because the extraction wounds are very small, but the risk must be assessed. Where there is a keloid history, a small test area may be treated first and observed for [3 to 6] months before a full procedure.
Yes, once the follicles have been permanently lost and the styling that caused it has stopped. Transplanted hair is as vulnerable to traction as native hair, so tight braids, weaves and extensions must be avoided on the treated area afterwards.
Only when the condition is diagnosed, treated and stable, typically for at least [12] months. Transplanting into active CCCA usually fails because the scarring process destroys the new follicles as well.
Yes. Transplanted hair keeps the characteristics of the donor hair, including its curl pattern, texture and colour. New growth may look finer or straighter at first and settles into its natural curl as it matures over 12 to 18 months.
Yes. Most procedures for women are performed without shaving the recipient area. A dermatological assessment comes first to identify the cause of the loss, because traction alopecia, CCCA and female pattern hair loss are treated differently.
FUE leaves dot scars under 1 mm, which are hidden by hair at a grade 2 clipper length or longer. On darker skin these dots can appear lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. At very short lengths or a skin fade they may be visible, which is worth considering if you keep a close-shaved style.
The anaesthetic injections at the start are the main discomfort, and sedation is available. After that the scalp is numb. Tightness and tenderness for two to three days are normal and managed with standard painkillers.
Between six and nine hours in one day, usually slightly longer per graft than a straight-hair procedure because extraction must follow the curved follicle.
Not on the treated area for at least [6] months, and ideally avoid high-tension styles there permanently. Loose styles that put no tension on the hairline can usually be worn from month [3].
Often, yes, after assessment. Unshaven procedures suit women and men with enough native hair to conceal the grafts. Curved follicles make unshaven extraction more demanding, so suitability depends on curl type and donor density. See our [unshaven hair transplant] guide.
