Hair Transplantation for Alopecia Areata Patients

Ringworm is a condition that causes rapid hair loss in areas such as hair, eyebrows, beard and eyelashes. It is characterized by round or oval open balding areas on the scalp. Ringworm, which can be seen in men and women, is a condition that is more common in men and young people. This condition can cause psychological problems by affecting the individual’s appearance. It should be treated as soon as possible to prevent loss of self-confidence.

What is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia Areata is a common condition that causes hair loss and can occur at any age. This condition causes scarless hair loss on the scalp. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disease that can affect any hair-bearing area and can present in a variety of ways.

It usually causes small, coin-sized, round bald patches on the scalp, but can also affect hair in other areas such as the beard, eyebrows, eyelashes, body and limbs.

It is estimated that about 0.2% of the world’s population is affected by Alopecia Areata at any given time.

Up to 5% of patients with Alopecia Areata may develop hair loss over the entire scalp (Alopecia Areata Totalis) and 1% may develop Alopecia Areata Universalis (loss of all body hair).

Alopecia Areata is an unpredictable condition and therefore no treatment may be appropriate for a subgroup of patients, as the spontaneous recovery rate ranges from 8% to 68%, depending on the severity of the disease. Management approaches should be determined.

What Causes Ringworm (Alopecia areata)?

Ringworm is defined as a condition in which hair such as hair, eyebrows, beard and eyelashes fall out rapidly. This condition is characterized by the appearance of round or oval balding areas on the scalp. Ringworm can be seen in both men and women, but it is more common in men and young people than in women. This condition, which affects the appearance of the person, can also cause psychological problems. It is recommended to start treatment as soon as possible to prevent loss of self-confidence.

Although the cause of ringworm is not known exactly, autoimmune causes are thought to be effective. The body perceives its own cells and tissues as foreign, which causes the immune system to attack these cells. If this attack is directed against the hair follicles, the hair stops growing and hair loss occurs. Ringworm is also reported to be an infectious disease.

According to other studies, ringworm is closely related to genetic factors. A child with a family history of ringworm is 3 to 6 times more likely to have this condition than normal. It has also been noted that ringworm may be associated with certain diseases and may support the influence of genetic factors. These include eczema, chronic inflammatory thyroid disease, psoriasis, vitiligo and lupus.

What are the symptoms of ringworm (Alopecia areata)?

The symptoms of ringworm often have distinctive features. They appear as smooth, oval or balding areas on one or more areas of the scalp. The affected skin areas are healthy and show no signs of inflammation, only hair loss. This loss usually starts on the scalp, but the effect of ringworm can spread to many hairy areas such as eyelashes, eyebrows, armpits, beards and groin. The disease can also cause changes in nail structure. The course of the disease is unpredictable and, in some cases, chronic and recurrent.

Spontaneous improvement, stabilization or worsening can be observed during the course of the disease. When hair regrows in the balding area, it will usually be white at first.

Can hair transplantation be performed in Alopecia Areata?

Every hair on the body can be transplanted to any desired area of the body by removing the hair from where it was taken with appropriate methods, and the hair follicle transplanted to each living skin area successfully holds. Therefore, it is possible to transplant hair from a different part of the body to balding areas that have been lost due to ringworm or any other reason. The main problem is not the area, but the hair follicles, because the hair follicle that is falling out is actually the main problem. When healthy hair follicles are taken from a non-diseased area and transplanted to the diseased area, they successfully hold and continue to grow in that area. In short, hair transplantation to the area with ringworm ensures that the hair is retained in that area.

When should individuals diagnosed with ringworm (Alopecia areata) have a hair transplant?

Even if any treatment method is applied, this period should continue for at least 6 to 8 months. If slight improvements are observed during this period, the hair transplantation plan should be postponed and the treatment process should be continued. The best time to wait for the decision “I want to have a hair transplant” is between 8 and 12 months. Because there is a possibility of hair growth even at this stage.
