FUE Hair Transplant in Turkey

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair transplant technique that removes individual follicular units from the back and sides of the scalp with a 0.6 to 1.0 mm punch and implants them into thinning areas, leaving no linear scar. In Turkey, FUE is performed in a single day under local anaesthesia and costs from €3,000 (about £2,600 or $3,500) as an all-inclusive package.

What Is FUE and How Does It Work?

FUE moves hair follicles one at a time from a donor area that is genetically resistant to pattern hair loss — the back and sides of the scalp — into areas where hair has thinned or been lost. Because each follicle is extracted individually rather than cut out as a strip of scalp, FUE leaves tiny dot scars that are hidden by surrounding hair instead of a single linear scar.
Every FUE procedure has the same three stages. What distinguishes a good result from an average one is not the stages themselves but how carefully the hairline is designed and how each graft is angled.

01

Extraction

The donor area is shaved and numbed with local anaesthetic. Each follicular unit — a natural group of one to four hairs — is freed with a motorised punch between 0.6 and 1.0 mm in diameter and lifted out. Extraction is spread evenly across the donor area so that no single zone is visibly thinned. Grafts are kept in a chilled holding solution until placement.

02

Recipient site creation

The surgeon opens small incisions in the thinning area, one for each graft. The angle, direction and depth of these incisions determine which way the new hair will grow, so this stage decides whether the result looks natural. At our clinic, incisions are made with sapphire blades as standard, which is why most of our FUE procedures are, strictly, Sapphire FUE.

03

Implantation

Grafts are placed into the incisions with fine forceps, single-hair grafts along the front edge of the hairline and multi-hair grafts behind it to build density. A typical session of 3,000 grafts takes six to seven hours, with breaks.

FUE, Sapphire FUE, Micro FUE, DHI and FUT Compared

Several names in hair transplantation describe variations of FUE rather than different procedures. All of them except FUT extract follicles the same way; they differ in what is used to open the recipient site and how the graft is placed.
Technique How grafts are extracted How the recipient site is opened How grafts are placed Donor scarring Best suited to
Classic FUE Individual punch extraction Steel blades or needles Forceps Dot scars under 1 mm General coverage
Sapphire FUE Individual punch extraction Sapphire blades, smaller and cleaner incisions Forceps Dot scars under 1 mm Large areas and high graft counts
Micro FUE Punch of 0.6 to 0.8 mm Steel or sapphire blades Forceps Smallest dot scars Fine hair, hairline refinement
DHI Individual punch extraction No separate stage, the implanter opens and places in one motion Choi implanter pen Dot scars under 1 mm Hairline detail, crown, unshaven procedures
FUT (strip method) A strip of scalp is removed and dissected Steel blades Forceps One linear scar across the back of the head Patients who wear hair long and need a very high graft yield
On Micro FUE and Bio FUE: neither is a separate surgical technique. Micro FUE describes FUE performed with smaller punches, typically 0.6 to 0.8 mm. Bio FUE describes FUE combined with PRP or a growth-factor solution. PRP is part of our standard aftercare, but the evidence that it measurably improves graft survival is limited, and we do not price it as a separate technique.

Who Is a Good Candidate for FUE?

The most important factor is not how much hair you have lost but how much hair you have left at the back and sides. FUE can only redistribute what the donor area holds, so suitability depends on the balance between the area to be covered and the grafts available to cover it.
Pattern of hair loss Typical grafts FUE suitability What to expect
Norwood 2 to 3, receding temples 1,500 – 3,000 Very good Full hairline restoration in one session
Norwood 3 Vertex, early crown thinning 2,800 – 3,800 Very good Hairline restored, crown improved
Norwood 4, recession and thinning crown 3,000 – 4,200 Good Strong front and mid-scalp, partial crown coverage
Norwood 5 4,000 – 5,000 Good, with strong donor Front and mid-scalp density, crown coverage; second session possible
Norwood 6 to 7 Donor-limited Depends on donor capacity Coverage rather than density; realistic planning essential
Female pattern hair loss 1,500 – 3,000 Case by case Assessment first; unshaven FUE often preferred
Scar or burn area Area dependent Case by case Graft survival in scar tissue is lower; test session sometimes advised
FUE is usually not the right choice if:
  • Your hair loss is still progressing rapidly and has not been stabilised with medication
  • Your donor density is below around 40 follicular units per cm²
  • You have diffuse unpatterned alopecia, where the donor area is also thinning
  • You have an active scalp condition such as untreated seborrhoeic dermatitis or alopecia areata
  • You are under 23 and your final pattern of loss is not yet predictable

Women can be candidates, but female pattern loss is usually diffuse. A dermatological assessment comes first to rule out thyroid, iron or hormonal causes.

How Many Grafts Can FUE Provide?

A typical donor area holds between 6,000 and 8,000 grafts that can be safely harvested across a lifetime. Most patients receive between 2,500 and 4,500 grafts in a single FUE session. With favourable donor density, a single session can reach [5,000] grafts or more, sometimes over two consecutive days.
The ceiling is set by the donor area, not by the package. Our FUE package price covers the maximum number of grafts your donor area can safely provide, so graft count does not change what you pay. It also means we have no reason to harvest more than your donor should give — over-harvesting is the most common cause of a visibly thin donor area years after surgery.
Each graft carries on average 2.2 hairs, so 3,000 grafts is roughly 6,600 hairs. For what each graft range typically covers, see [what different graft counts look like].

FUE Recovery: What Happens Week by Week

Recovery after FUE is fast at the surface and slow underneath. The scalp looks healed within two weeks; the hair takes twelve to eighteen months.
Timeframe What happens What you can do
Day 1 to 3 Tightness, mild swelling on the forehead, tiny scabs forming Rest, sleep with head raised, first wash at the clinic on day 2
Day 4 to 10 Scabs soften and fall away with daily washing, donor area heals Desk work, short walks, flying home
Week 2 Redness fades, scalp looks close to normal Most social and work activities, light exercise from day 14
Week 2 to 8 Shock loss: most transplanted hairs shed, follicles remain Normal routine, gym and swimming
Month 3 to 4 New growth begins, fine in texture Haircuts with scissors
Month 6 to 9 Around 50 to 70 per cent of the result, hair thickening Clipper cuts, hair dye
Month 12 to 18 Final result, crown usually last to complete Assessment for a second session, if needed
Shock loss is expected. Between weeks two and eight most transplanted hairs shed. The follicle stays in place and regrows from month three or four. It is the point at which patients most often worry, and it is not a sign that the transplant has failed.

Aftercare Rules After FUE

  • Do not touch, scratch or rub the implanted area for the first 10 days
  • The first wash is done at the clinic on day 2; wash gently as instructed once a day until day 14
  • Sleep on your back with your head raised for the first 5 to 7 nights to reduce swelling
  • Avoid alcohol for 7 days and smoking for at least 14 days
  • No gym, swimming or heavy exercise for 14 days; no contact sports for 4 weeks
  • Keep your scalp out of direct sun for 4 weeks; a loose hat is fine after day 10
  • No saunas, steam rooms or hair dye for 4 weeks
  • Take prescribed medication exactly as instructed and send follow-up photos at months 1, 3, 6 and 12

Risks of FUE and How They Are Minimised

FUE is a low-risk procedure when performed by a qualified surgical team, but it is still surgery. Most side effects are short-lived; the few long-term risks are almost entirely avoidable with correct planning.
Risk How common How long it lasts How it is minimised
Swelling of the forehead Common 2 to 5 days Sleeping with the head raised, prescribed anti-inflammatory medication
Redness and scabbing Expected 7 to 14 days Correct washing technique from day 2
Temporary numbness Common Weeks to a few months Resolves on its own as nerves recover
Shock loss Expected Weeks 2 to 8 Not preventable; regrowth follows from month 3
Folliculitis, ingrown hairs Occasional Days to weeks Warm compresses, treatment by the clinic if persistent
Infection Rare Treatable Sterile theatre, antibiotics prescribed where indicated
Unnatural hairline Avoidable Permanent unless corrected Hairline designed by the surgeon, age-appropriate height and irregular edge
Over-harvested donor Avoidable Permanent Even extraction spread, graft count limited to safe donor capacity
The two risks patients most often underestimate are an unnatural hairline and an over-harvested donor. Neither is caused by the technique; both are caused by decisions made in planning. Ask any clinic who designs the hairline and how many grafts they intend to take from your donor, and why.

What Our Robotic Hair Transplant Patients Say

Why Patients Choose Turkey for FUE

Three factors account for most of the difference. Operating costs in Istanbul are a fraction of those in London or New York for the same licensed standard of theatre. Turkish clinics perform far more hair transplants per year than clinics in most Western markets, which builds surgical team experience. And hotel, transfers and aftercare are bundled into one price, whereas in the UK and US they are either not offered or paid for separately.
The price difference is not a difference in surgical standard, but standards do vary between Turkish clinics, as they do everywhere. Before booking anywhere, check who performs the extraction and implantation, whether the facility is licensed by the Ministry of Health, and how many procedures the team performs per day. Our [cost guide] sets out eight questions to ask.

FUE Hair Transplant in Turkey: Frequently Asked Questions

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicular units are removed from the back and sides of the scalp with a small punch and implanted into thinning areas. It leaves tiny dot scars rather than the linear scar left by the older strip method, FUT.
FUT removes a strip of scalp from the donor area and dissects it into grafts, leaving a linear scar across the back of the head. FUE removes follicles individually, leaving small dot scars that are hidden by surrounding hair. FUE allows shorter hairstyles afterwards; FUT can yield more grafts in one session for some patients.
The extraction is identical. The difference is the blade used to open the recipient incisions: Sapphire FUE uses sapphire blades instead of steel, producing smaller, cleaner incisions that allow denser placement and faster healing. At our clinic, sapphire blades are used as standard.
Neither is better overall. FUE with sapphire blades suits large areas and high graft counts. DHI places grafts with a Choi implanter and suits hairline detail, the crown and unshaven procedures. Many patients are treated with a combination of both.
The anaesthetic injections at the start are the only uncomfortable part, usually lasting a few minutes. After that the scalp is numb for the rest of the procedure. Most patients report mild tightness and tenderness for two to three days afterwards, managed with standard painkillers.
Yes, but they are small. Each extraction leaves a dot scar under 1 mm across, spread over the donor area. With hair at a grade 2 clipper length or longer they are not visible. FUE does not leave the linear scar associated with FUT.
Between six and nine hours in a single day, depending on the number of grafts. Procedures of over [4,500] grafts are sometimes planned across two consecutive days.
Three nights is standard. You arrive the day before the procedure, have the operation on day 1, return to the clinic for the first wash on day 2, and fly home on day 3 or 4.
New growth begins at months three to four. By month six to nine most patients see 50 to 70 per cent of the result, and the final result appears between 12 and 18 months, with the crown usually last.
The transplanted follicles are permanent, because they come from a donor area genetically resistant to pattern hair loss. Your untransplanted native hair can continue to thin, which is why many patients continue medication such as finasteride or minoxidil after surgery.
Most patients receive 2,500 to 4,500 grafts. With good donor density a session can reach [5,000] or more. The limit is set by what your donor area can safely provide, not by the package.
From €3,000 (about £2,600 or $3,500) at our clinic as an all-inclusive package covering the procedure, hotel, transfers, medication and 12 months of follow-up. The price does not change with the number of grafts.
Desk work is possible after three to five days if you are comfortable with visible redness and scabs. Most patients in client-facing roles take seven to ten days, until the redness settles.
Yes, if the donor area is stable. Female hair loss is often diffuse, so a dermatological assessment comes first to rule out thyroid, iron or hormonal causes. Unshaven or partially shaven FUE is often used for women.
Short-term: swelling, redness, scabbing, temporary numbness and shock loss. Rare: folliculitis and infection. Long-term risks — an unnatural hairline or an over-harvested donor — come from planning decisions rather than the technique, which is why surgeon involvement matters.
